ImpactConnect — Civic Networking, Volunteering & Food Redistribution
Open-source digital platform unifying professional networking, community collaboration, and measurable social impact with surplus food redistribution.
Connect young professionals and students with vetted NGO needs, volunteer projects, and surplus food redistribution—tracking verifiable impact metrics including volunteer hours, meals saved, and lives touched.
The Root Challenge
Young changemakers face fragmented networking on LinkedIn and Discord, lack structured channels to match their digital skills with vetted NGO needs, and see no unified ledger to track volunteer impact. Simultaneously, acute food waste and hunger coexist: restaurants discard surplus meals while local welfare groups struggle to source nutrition in real time.
In Sri Lanka, persistent economic vulnerability has increased urban nutrition insecurity while community kitchens struggle for dependable ingredients. Civic networks like Generation ALPHA and OMLAS have shown the immense potential of youth solidarity, yet lack a unified open-source technological hub to coordinate volunteers, resources, and surplus food.
Structural Root Causes:
- Fragmented professional networks: commercial platforms are noisy and lack purposeful civic or non-profit alignment
- No bridge between tech skills and social impact: developers and designers want to volunteer but cannot find vetted NGO tasks
- Invisible social impact: volunteer hours, meals saved, and lives touched are never transparently accredited or tracked
- Acute food waste vs hunger gap: restaurants and households lack an on-demand logistics bridge to coordinate real-time surplus food claims with grassroots NGOs
Target Community & Beneficiaries
Tech workers, designers, and students seeking to apply their professional skills to high-impact non-profit initiatives.
- Cannot find verified volunteer opportunities fitting their schedules
- No recognition or portfolio proof of volunteer impact
Non-profit coordinators needing technical, administrative, and volunteer support without enterprise software costs.
- Overwhelmed by ad-hoc volunteer messages
- Inability to publicize urgent project and material needs
Restaurants, caterers, and volunteer couriers coordinating surplus food pickups to prevent food waste.
- No real-time inventory channel before food spoils
- Logistical uncertainty on pickup timing and safe handover
The Proposed Solution & Workflow
An open-source ecosystem organized into six integrated modules: Professional Networking, Community Feed & Groups, Project & Collaboration Hub (NGO needs board), Events & Mentorship, Impact Modules (Food Redistribution & Verified Dashboard), and Gamified Impact Badges.
Operational Model & Governance
Open-source platform backed by Supabase with Row Level Security (RLS). NGOs post verified needs; donors post surplus food with geolocation; changemakers apply for skill-matched projects and log verified impact hours.
Citizen Engagement Lifecycle
Key Civic-Tech Innovations
Architecture & Engineering Approach
Built on React, Vite, Tailwind CSS, shadcn/ui, and Framer Motion on the frontend; Supabase (PostgreSQL, Auth, Realtime, Storage, Edge Functions) with strict Row Level Security (RLS) on the backend; and an extensible Python + FastAPI ML microservice for TF-IDF skill matching and time-series demand forecasting.
Supabase client caches user profiles, offline project applications, and cached food listings in IndexedDB for resilient offline viewing on unstable mobile connections.
Image optimization via Supabase Storage transforms; payload size under 85KB gzip; lazy loading for community feed posts and media.
Trilingual UI localization strings across Sinhala, Tamil, and English with fallback dictionary resolution.
Granular Supabase Row Level Security (RLS) policies: users edit only their own profiles; messages restricted to participants; donor addresses fuzzed to neighborhood radius.
Implementation Milestones
Phase 1: Foundation & Supabase Setup
Phase 1 · IN PROGRESSScaffold React + Vite + Tailwind + shadcn/ui monorepo, configure Supabase project, setup email/social auth, and build profiles schema with RLS policies.
Phase 2: Networking & Community Feed
Phase 2 · IN PROGRESSBuild connection requests, directory search with skill filters, real-time messaging, and group feed with discussions and upvotes.
Phase 3: Collaboration Hub & NGO Board
Phase 3 · IN PROGRESSDevelop project board for volunteer and open-source gigs, NGO needs board, and tag-based SQL skill matching.
Phase 4: Food Redistribution & Impact Dashboard
Phase 4 · IN PROGRESSDeploy food surplus listings, volunteer pickup claiming, and real-time impact dashboard aggregating hours, meals, and badges.
Phase 5: Polish, CI/CD & Production Deployment
Phase 5 · IN PROGRESSResponsive dark/light polish, comprehensive documentation, good-first-issues triage, and deployment on Vercel and Supabase.
Measurable Success Criteria
Operational Assumptions & Governance Ethics
ImpactConnect is explicitly non-profit and privacy-first. Food listings require admin or NGO verification to prevent misuse, and commercial exploitation of volunteer labor is strictly barred by code of conduct.
- Vetted local NGOs and welfare networks are willing to adopt digital claiming for surplus food
- Free tiers of Supabase and Vercel are sufficient for MVP season load
- Supabase cloud infrastructure and Realtime WebSockets reliability
- Accurate food safety guidelines acknowledged by participating donors and volunteers
